ℹ️ Quick Answer: Instagram Plus is an optional $3.99 a month upgrade, and regular Instagram stays free. It adds 48-hour Stories, extra viewer insights, and custom icons and fonts. Meta folded it into a new lineup called Meta One on September 15, 2026, with bundles at $7.99 and $19.99. Paying doesn’t remove ads, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Instagram Plus is the $3.99 a month paid tier of Instagram, and this week Meta wrapped it into something bigger. On September 15 the company announced Meta One, a set of subscriptions across Instagram and Facebook and WhatsApp and Meta AI, and it says the plans are rolling out gradually.

I haven’t subscribed to any of it, so this is a read of what Meta published and what reporters got out of the company.

Do you have to pay for Instagram now?

No. Instagram stays free, and Meta says so in plain words. The announcement reads, “The core experience across our apps and Meta AI has always been free, and that’s not changing.” Instagram’s own post about Plus goes further and says the app “will always be free,” and calls the subscription “an optional upgrade.”

Meta AI stays free too, for what Meta calls everyday use.

What Instagram Plus gets you for $3.99

Mostly Stories features. CBS News reported when Plus first launched in June that subscribers can keep a Story up for 48 hours instead of 24, and build more than one audience list so certain Stories only go to certain people. You can also see how many times a Story got rewatched.

You also get a custom app icon and bio font, and Meta says it recently added DM previews and a notification when certain people view your Story. All of that is for people who post. If you mostly scroll, nothing on the list changes what scrolling is like.

Meta One prices at a glance

Single apps run $2.99 to $3.99 a month, and the bundles start at $7.99. With a gradual rollout other countries may differ, but these are the US dollar prices from Meta’s announcement.

PlanPrice per monthWhat it adds
Instagram Plus$3.99Stories extras, viewer insights
Facebook Plus$3.99Custom icons, super hearts
WhatsApp Plus$2.99Themes, stickers, more pinned chats
Core$7.99All three Plus plans, more Meta AI generation
Premium$19.99Core, with the highest AI limits
Essential (creators and businesses)From $14.99Verified badge, Meta Business Agent

On the business side, The Hollywood Reporter says the top plan, called Max, is $499 a month. The three Plus plans add up to $10.97 on their own, so Core only saves money if you’d use all three or want the extra AI generation.

Do the ads go away if you pay?

Not according to The Hollywood Reporter, whose reporter sat in on Meta’s briefing and wrote that “even paying for a subscription won’t remove ads.” Meta’s own announcement doesn’t mention ads either way, and removing ads isn’t among the benefits it lists for any tier. Helen Ma, Meta’s VP of subscriptions, told that briefing the free, ad-supported apps are still the main business. She said, “our intention is not and will never be to degrade anything or to force people to pay.”

Ads on a free app make sense to me. Either you give me ads or you don’t. If I’m paying, I don’t think I should still see ads, and as far as anyone has reported, that’s what $3.99 gets you here.

Europe is the exception. Meta sells a separate subscription for no ads in the EU and announced one for the UK last September.
