ℹ️ Quick Answer: Starting October 9, 2026, free Gemini only gets one model, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. If you use the Gemini app without paying, you lose access to Flash and Pro, and you don’t have to do anything for that to happen. AI Plus ($4.99 a month) keeps Flash but loses Pro on a date Google will email subscribers about.

Last updated October 4, 2026

This one showed up as an updated Gemini help page, and 9to5Google spotted it on October 3. If you use the Gemini app without paying, you’re about to have one model instead of three.

You don’t have to do anything for it to happen. If you never open the model picker, or Gemini just showed up on your phone when it replaced Google Assistant on Android in September, the first sign will probably be the answers themselves.

What changes for free Gemini on October 9

Starting October 9, people using the Gemini app without a Google AI plan get Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and nothing else. The 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro models move behind a subscription.

Here’s how Google’s help page splits it up:

  • No plan: Flash-Lite only
  • AI Plus: Flash-Lite and Flash
  • AI Pro and AI Ultra: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro, plus the Deep Think reasoning mode

Google also added usage limits back in May. Free Gemini runs on limits that refresh every five hours until you hit a weekly cap, and AI Plus gets twice the free limit while AI Pro gets four times as much.

Google’s page only talks about personal accounts, so if you use Gemini through work or school, it doesn’t describe your setup. And if you’d rather not use Gemini at all, I put together a guide on how to turn off Gemini everywhere it shows up.

What you’ll notice with Flash-Lite

Google hasn’t said how much you’ll notice in everyday chats. Flash-Lite is the fastest and cheapest model in Google’s 3.5 series, and it only came out in July.

When Google launched it, the company called 3.5 Flash-Lite its “fastest, most cost-effective 3.5-class model.” It called 3.6 Flash, the one free users are losing, its “workhorse,” with better coding, knowledge work, and multimodal performance. So going by Google’s own description, the gap is most likely to show up in code, bigger research-style questions, and anything with photos or video.

There’s also a setting that can help. Google’s help page says you’ll be able to set each model’s effort to low, medium, or high, and 9to5Google reports that setting is still rolling out this month. Higher effort gives more thorough answers, but it uses up your limit faster.

AI Plus subscribers lose Pro too

AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro. Google hasn’t given Plus a date yet, and it says Plus subscribers should get an email explaining when the change reaches them.

AI Plus costs $4.99 a month, and on October 4, Google’s plans page still listed “more access to 3.1 Pro” as one of its perks. The help page only covers models, so nothing in it touches your Plus storage. If Pro was the reason you signed up, the cheapest Google plan that keeps it is AI Pro at $19.99 a month.

My take: free Gemini is still a gift

Honestly, if someone’s giving you something, you can’t complain about what you get. It’s unfortunate, but AI isn’t cheap to run, and anything free you get from an AI company is a gift.

Free Gemini FAQ

Is Gemini still free after October 9?

Yes. Without a Google AI plan you get Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, with usage limits that refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap.

Do I need to do anything before October 9?

No. The change starts on Google’s side on October 9 for everyone using Gemini without a plan.

Which Gemini plans include Pro after the change?

Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month) and AI Ultra. AI Plus loses Pro once its change takes effect.

Does this change affect work or school accounts?

Google’s help page only describes personal Google accounts. It doesn’t say anything about work or school accounts.

You don’t have to pick anything on October 9. Stay free, see how Flash-Lite handles your usual questions, and decide about paying after that.
