Claude Opus 5.5 Is Out. What Changes If You Pay for Claude.

Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5.5 yesterday, and OpenAI put out GPT-6 Sol and Luna the same day.

I’ve been on Claude Max 20x for months, running a few Claude Code sessions side by side, so what I care about is whether anything changes for the person paying $20 or $200 a month.

What’s new in Claude Opus 5.5

In plain words, it’s an Opus that gets close to Anthropic’s top Fable 5.1 model. The announcement page puts output at “more than 30% faster than Opus 5” and says at default settings “it will cost 40% less than Opus 5 on typical workloads.” Anthropic adds that in its own use the gap to Fable 5.1 “is narrower than these scores suggest.”

It’s in the Claude app, Claude Code, and the API. Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 “will follow in the coming weeks,” per the same page.

Do Pro and Max subscribers get Claude Opus 5.5 automatically?

Yes, and you don’t have to do anything. Latent Space reports it’s “now the default in Claude Code and the Claude app, including Cowork.” Anthropic’s page doesn’t spell out plan-by-plan availability, and its tips post just says to “check that the model picker says Opus 5.5.”

The line that touches your subscription is Anthropic’s “we’re increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans.” It’s a nice reversal after the 17% limit cut earlier this month.

Is it faster and cheaper for you, or only for developers?

Faster for you, cheaper mostly for developers. The price cut is API pricing, $4 in and $20 out per million tokens, down from $5 and $25. Your Pro or Max bill doesn’t move. What you get is the speed, and a model that uses fewer tokens per task stretches the same allowance further.

The usage limit reset, and why it matters

A limit reset is a free button that refills your usage right away, and you can now save it for when you need it. The announcement says subscribers get “a rate limit reset, which you can now save and use whenever you choose.” The help center says it refills “either your five-hour session limit or your weekly usage limit.” You find it under Settings, then Usage, and click Reset for free. It expires on the date shown, and it only works on the web or desktop app, not on mobile or in Claude Code.

To me this is the key change. The thing that hurts with Claude is hitting the wall mid-week and being told to wait days. Being able to bank a reset for a busy week is what I’d actually wanted.

Where I’ve landed on Claude vs ChatGPT

I’m dropping from Max 20x to Max 5x and adding a ChatGPT Pro plan for Codex. ChatGPT and Claude compete so closely now that we’re the beneficiaries, and there’s no reason to be locked into one brand when both do the job. I still feel Codex gives more bang for the buck, and I haven’t put enough hours on Opus 5.5 to say whether that changes but it is certainly better than Opus 5.1 from my early experience with the model.

If you already pay for Claude, the model got faster and the limits went up, and there’s no setting to change.
