If you pay for ChatGPT Plus or Pro, the ChatGPT Instant vs Thinking choice is now yours every chat. On September 14, OpenAI stopped switching you to Thinking automatically.
Honestly, the change makes sense to me, because people forget to turn Thinking or Pro off. I’ve done it myself. I had Pro mode on, forgot, and wondered why every answer was taking so long until I realized Pro was on instead of Thinking. Now I watch my usage and my rates.
What changed on September 14
As of September 14, 2026, ChatGPT Plus and Pro no longer switch from Instant to Thinking on their own, and the Higher intelligence setting is gone from ChatGPT on the web for those plans.
That comes straight from OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes. OpenAI’s help article on GPT-5.6 adds that asking ChatGPT to “think harder” or “think deeply” won’t move you to a different thinking level anymore. Mixed also reports, citing OpenAI’s changelog, that GPT-5.5 leaves ChatGPT on October 14.
How to pick Instant vs Thinking now
You pick the level in the model picker before you send.
Instant is the fast one for everyday questions. Medium and High are standard and extended thinking on GPT-5.6 Sol, Extra High is the most Sol will do, and Pro hands the question to the Pro models for long, hard jobs. OpenAI’s availability table says Extra High is available “on eligible paid plans,” so check your own picker to see which levels your plan shows.
When Instant is enough, and when to pick Thinking
Instant handles most of what people ask ChatGPT. Thinking earns its wait when the question has several steps or a wrong answer costs you money.
Instant is fine for rewriting an email or summarizing an article you pasted in. Go to Medium or High when the question has moving parts, like comparing two phone plans with different fees or fixing a spreadsheet formula. Pro is for the stuff you’d otherwise pay a person for, and it takes noticeably longer.
The cost of leaving Thinking or Pro on
Leaving a high level on means slower answers on every message and an allowance burned on questions that never needed it.
If you hit a Thinking limit, OpenAI says ChatGPT may carry on with another model (usage and fallbacks). The $200 Pro plan gets 200 GPT-6 Pro messages a week, and the $100 Pro plan gets 50 a week shared with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, per the same help article. Spend those on questions Instant could handle and they’re gone, and Support won’t reset a limit for you. Codex has its own allowance and its own reset banking, per OpenAI’s Codex changelog.

What Free, Go, and Business users see
Free and Go users get a Think button instead of a slider, and Business keeps the automatic switching setting.
On Free and Go, Think runs on GPT-5.6 Luna, not the Sol model paid plans get (OpenAI). Business users still have Higher intelligence under Settings, then General, and it controls whether ChatGPT adds thinking on its own while Instant is selected.
