ChatGPT Keeps Erroring for Plus and Pro Users. Here’s What OpenAI’s Status Page Says.

ChatGPT errors hit Plus and Pro subscribers in three incidents on September 22 and 23, and OpenAI’s own status history confirms it. If you pay $20 a month for Plus or $200 for Pro and got an error banner this week instead of an answer, the problem was on OpenAI’s side.

Is ChatGPT Down Right Now?

As of this writing, no. Every incident this week on OpenAI’s status history is marked resolved with “All impacted services have now fully recovered.”

Open status.openai.com and check three things: the incident list on the front page, the components list below it with a ChatGPT row, and the History link for past entries, where a closed one reads “All impacted services have now fully recovered.”

What Happened This Week

Three incidents in two days, all on paid plans, with the times as OpenAI’s status page displays them.

• September 22: “Increased error rate for Plus and Pro users.” Opened 9:58 AM, resolved 10:37 AM. Incident page.
• September 22: “Elevated Error Rates for ChatGPT Work, across Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans.” Resolved 3:58 PM.
• September 23: “Elevated Error Rates for ChatGPT across Plus and Pro plans.” Resolved 9:54 AM.

Why It Keeps Hitting Paying Users

OpenAI hasn’t said why. The status history shows paid-plan incidents recurring through September.

The same history page lists a September 15 entry, “Elevated errors from GPT-5.6 and GPT-5.6 Instant on paid plans,” and a September 9 one, “Increased Error Rate For Pro and Plus Plan Conversations.” With this week’s three, that’s five paid-plan error incidents in two weeks. Free users, whose limits work differently, appear in none of them.

What to Do When ChatGPT Errors

Check the status page, retry, then switch models or switch from the browser to the app.

• Start with status.openai.com, because if there’s an open incident, nothing on your end will fix it.
• If the page is clear, wait a minute and hit regenerate. Elevated error rates mean some requests fail, not all, so a retry often works.
• Another model may be unaffected, since the September 15 incident named specific ones.
• The app and the web version don’t always fail together, so try the other one.

Does This Affect GPT-6 Sol and Luna?

It’s unknown at the moment. OpenAI hasn’t connected them, and the incident pages don’t name the new models.

OpenAI announced GPT-6 Sol and Luna on September 22, the same day as two of the incidents, and said it was rolling them out gradually “to keep service stable for everyone.” OpenAI hasn’t said whether the two are related.
