Free ChatGPT Limits: What “Unlimited” Actually Covers

I opened X yesterday to see that free ChatGPT was unlimited now so I learned more about what unlimited really meant.

I found in OpenAI’s own release notes, next to a second sentence almost nobody quoted, limits still apply to file uploads, images, and other tools. Unlimited covers typing, and it stops there.

Below is what changed, what stayed the same, and a trade-off in the ad settings that can quietly cut what you get.

What OpenAI Actually Announced

OpenAI is making GPT‑5.6 Luna the default model for free ChatGPT accounts, removing the cap on text chats, and adding a Think button for harder questions. Paying users get a separate update: a retuned GPT‑5.6 Sol and a slider that controls how much effort goes into each answer.

The announcement went up on August 6, 2026 and splits cleanly in two. Free and Go users move to GPT‑5.6 Luna as their default, get unlimited text chats, and pick up a Think button that hands the model more time on a question that needs it. Plus and Pro users stay on GPT‑5.6 Sol, now tuned for more reliable facts and tighter answers, and they get a slider that runs from quick everyday replies up to extended effort for planning, research, writing, and coding.

The backdrop is scale. ChatGPT crossed a billion weekly users this summer, and OpenAI has spent the past year steadily moving the free tier toward what used to be the paid experience. When You Get It, and Why You Might Not Have It Yet

The rollout is staged across two weeks. GPT‑5.6 Luna became the default during the week of August 3, and unlimited text chats plus the Think button begin the week of August 10. An account still showing a cap is waiting its turn, not broken.

OpenAI’s release notes are specific about the order. Luna became the default for Free and Go “this week,” in notes dated August 6. Unlimited text chats and the Think button start “next week,” which lands them on August 10 and after.

So there’s a stretch of several days where the headlines and the app disagree with each other. If you read that free ChatGPT went unlimited and then hit a cap an hour later, your account is fine and you just haven’t been reached yet.

One more line worth catching: the release applies to the chat experience only. Work and Codex are not changing as part of it.

What’s Still Capped: Files, Images, and Tools

File uploads, image generation, and other tools keep the limits they already had. Free accounts also get 500 MB of file storage, against 4 GB on Go and 20 GB on Plus.

OpenAI says it in one sentence in the release notes: “Limits will still apply for file uploads, images and other tools.” That sentence sat directly under the unlimited announcement and barely made it into the coverage.

The storage tiers are worth knowing separately, because they’re easy to hit without noticing. OpenAI rolled out storage management across plans in May 2026, and the allowances are 500 MB on Free, 4 GB on Go, 20 GB on Plus and Business, and 100 GB on Pro. That covers files you upload and files ChatGPT creates for you, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and images. You can see where you stand under Settings, then Storage.

So the practical shape of the free ChatGPT limits after this update is simple enough. Type as much as you want. Everything else runs on the old rules. If your usual session is asking questions and reading written answers, you will probably never hit a wall again. If you upload a spreadsheet every morning or generate images for a project, nothing about your day changed.

The Ads Trade-Off Most Coverage Skipped

OpenAI began showing ads to free and Go users in the United States in February 2026, and opting out of them reduces your daily message allowance. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts stay ad-free.

The rollout targets logged-in adult users on the free and Go tiers, and OpenAI pointed at infrastructure costs as the reason. The company says ads don’t influence what ChatGPT tells you and that conversations stay private. Which ad you see depends on your conversation topic, your previous chats, and your interactions.

There are real guardrails on it. Users under 18 see no ads at all, ads don’t appear around sensitive subjects like health or politics, and advertisers get aggregated performance numbers rather than access to chat logs. You can hide individual ads, delete your ad data, and change your personalization settings.

The part OpenAI hasn’t spelled out is how that trade-off works now that text is unlimited. The reduced allowance was documented back when messages were capped for everybody. Whether opting out of ads today costs you image generations, file uploads, or nothing at all is not something the company has said, and I’d treat any specific number you see quoted as a guess until OpenAI publishes one.

If the data side of this is what bothers you, the ad targeting is only half the picture. The other half is the profile ChatGPT builds from your chats, which runs on its own setting.

What This Means If You’ve Never Paid for ChatGPT

For plain text conversation, the free tier now does roughly what a Plus subscription did a year ago. The reasons left to pay come down to heavy file work, image generation, and the thinking-effort slider.

That’s a genuine shift. The old free experience had you rationing questions, watching for the moment the model quietly downgraded mid-conversation, and deciding whether a follow-up was worth spending. That whole calculation goes away for text, and the Think button means the hard questions get real reasoning instead of a fast guess.

What you’re still buying with $20 a month is throughput on everything that isn’t typing, plus the slider that lets you dial effort up on a specific answer. If you mostly ask questions, draft emails, work through a decision, or get something explained, the free tier covers it. Features like ChatGPT Health have their own separate rules on top, worth reading before you connect anything sensitive.

The Honest Limitations

A few things are genuinely unsettled, and it’s better to know that going in than to find out at the wrong moment.

• “Unlimited” carries the phrase “subject to abuse guardrails” in OpenAI’s own wording, and the company has not defined where those sit. Nobody knows yet what volume trips them.
• The ads trade-off predates this change, and how the two interact is undocumented.
• Rollouts arrive at different times for different accounts, so a friend having the Think button before you means nothing.
• 500 MB of free storage fills faster than people expect once ChatGPT starts saving the images and documents it generates for you, and those count toward the same allowance.
• Everything here applies to the consumer chat experience. Work and Codex sit outside it.

The short version is that the ceiling moved for the thing most people actually do in ChatGPT, and stayed put for everything else. If you’ve been rationing questions on the free tier, stop.
